ALDEHYDES Aldehyde is a term derived from the English word formed as a contraction of the Latin phrase alcohol dehydrogenatum (dehydrogenated alcohol). Aldehydes are organic chemical compounds characterised by the presence of a carbonyl functional group (–CHO). Their general formula is R-CHO and they are produced when certain alcohols undergo oxidation and lose hydrogen atoms. For this reason, they are considered dehydrogenated alcohols. Aldehydes are named after their corresponding alcohols by replacing the suffix -ol with -al. ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE ACTIVITY The alkaline phosphatase (ALP) test measures the amount of this enzyme in the blood. ALP is found in all body tissues, but especially in the bones, liver, bile ducts, kidneys, and digestive system. It helps remove phosphate groups from various types of molecules. Changes in ALP levels can be associated with disease. Elevated ALP levels may indicate liver damage or bone disorders due to various causes. alpha-LINOLENIC ACID (see LIPIDS / Unsaturated lipids / polyunsaturated lipids ω-3) ALVEOLAR BONE (See BONE) ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE A progressive and currently incurable neurodegenerative disorder associated with older age. It accounts for 60–70% of all dementia cases. The most common early symptom is difficulty remembering recent events. As the disease progresses, symptoms may include language problems, disorientation (including a tendency to get lost), mood changes, loss of motivation, self-neglect, and behavioural problems. As the person’s condition worsens, they may gradually withdraw from family and social life. In ageing Western societies, Alzheimer’s disease is becoming one of the leading causes of death.
