OLIVE OILS AND HEALTH

OLIVE OILS AND HEALTH 92 Within the EU institutional context, the Common Agricultural Policy(CAP) in its 2023-2027 programme incorporates specific economic, social, and environmental objectives (Figure 6.4), which concur with the various functions related with agriculture in general and olive oil in particular. The olive oil market has been driven by two important factors for the sector: prices and United States of America (USA) tarif fs. According to the Olive Tree Municipalities Spanish Association (AEMO) (2020), the cost of the traditional olive tree cultivar, whether production is mechanised or not, is higher than the current price market for olive oil. This represents a serious problem in countries such as Spain in which the traditional method encompasses more than 70% of the total olive tree cultivated surface. Concerning tariffs, USA sanctions from 18th October 2019 for Spanish olive oil established an additional 25% for packed olive oil, which represents around 40% of all olive oil exports. In June 2021 a fiveyear agreement between the EU and the USA was reached to suppress this tariff. Figure 6.4.
