It may occur as a physiological process involving normal cells, but can also indicate pathological hyperplasia, which reflects precancerous changes. This is often one of the earliest steps in the transformation from normal to cancerous cells and may still appear normal under the microscope. However, hyperplasia does not always lead to cancer. It can result in an overall enlargement of the affected organ or tissue (hypertrophy). HYPERTRIGLYCERIDAEMIA An abnormal elevation of the concentration of triglycerides in the blood. (See also “Postprandial Hyperlipidaemia”) HYPOPHOSPHATAEMIA An abnormally low level of phosphorus in the blood. Common causes include alcoholism and certain medications. HYSTERECTOMY A surgical procedure to remove the uterus (also called the womb), either partially or totally. The uterus is a female reproductive organ located in the pelvis, positioned between the bladder and the rectum. During pregnancy, the fertilised egg implants in the endometrium (the inner lining of the uterus), where the embryo develops. In women who are not pregnant, the endometrium is shed periodically along with blood and other components during menstruation. In a total hysterectomy, the entire uterus (including the body and cervix) is removed. In some cases, other related organs such as the fallopian tubes and/or ovaries may also be removed in a single operation (total hysterectomy with salpingo-oophorectomy), either on one side (unilateral) or on both sides (bilateral). IDIOPATHIC Idiopathic or essential are adjectives used in medicine to describe diagnosed diseases or conditions for which the underlying cause is unknown.
