When it affects the arteries, it is known as arteriosclerosis. Healthy arteries are normally flexible and elastic, but over time their walls may harden. This hardening is a degenerative process, chronic and progressive, and that can result from various causes, including fat or calcium deposits. However, the most common and characteristic form of arteriosclerosis is caused by the abnormal accumulation of cholesterol, other fats, and additional substances in the arterial wall, leading to the formation of an atheromatous plaque. The alteration in this case is called atherosclerosis. These build-up narrows the arteries and reduces their elasticity, limiting blood and oxygen supply to tissues. Atherosclerosis is a specific type of arteriosclerosis that typically affects medium and large arteries. - atherogenic/s Factors or agents that promote the formation of atheroma plaques in the arteries. - atheroprotection Mechanism or factor that protects against the formation or progression of atherosclerosis. - atherothrombosis Pathological process involving the formation of a thrombus on an atherosclerotic plaque. - atheroma plaques; atherosclerotic plaques Typical lesions of the atherosclerosis process. They form in the arterial wall due to the accumulation of cells, platelets, cholesterol, other fats, etc., creating deposits in the inner layer of the arteries that can restrict blood flow. - ischaemic heart disease Disease caused by arteriosclerosis of the coronary arteries, resulting in reduced blood supply to the heart muscle. - coronary artery disease Disease caused by arteriosclerosis of the coronary arteries (the arteries of the heart).
