A new trial, PREDIMED-Plus (Prevention with Mediterranean diet-Plus; PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea-Plus), is aimed at assessing the effects of an intensive intervention on weight loss, based on an energy-reduced Mediterranean diet, physical activity promotion, and behavioural therapy for weight loss. Results of this study, with an intervention scheduled from 2013 to 2022 (and 2 additional years of observation without intervention), will permit in the following years to assess the effect of this intervention on primary cardiovascular prevention as well as on the prevention of other events such as cognitive decline and diagnoses of dementia.
