OLIVE OILS AND HEALTH

99 Virgin Olive Oil Benefits The beneficial effect of olive oil consumption, particularly extra virgin olive oil, has been demonstrated in both healthy populations and high cardiometabolic-risk adult ones. Olive oil is an essential component of the traditional Mediterranean diet and, as such, contributes to this dietary pattern’s benefits. The healthy effect of olive oil on its own has, however, been little studied, particularly at specific stages of life such as pregnancy, lactation, childhood, and adolescence despite their importance as determinants of adult health. In this chapter, we review the limited evidence available in this regard, and put forward the advantages of studying in greater depth the potential beneficial effects of olive oil consumption and its effects on health status from the early stages of life.
