They play a key role in blood clotting. When a blood vessel is damaged and bleeding occurs, platelets gather at the site to form a clot that seals the injury and stops the bleeding. They act through three mechanisms: they adhere to the site of injury, aggregate with one another, and form a temporary platelet plug. If the number of platelets is lower than normal, bleeding can occur more easily. Conversely, when platelet count is too high, there is a greater risk of thrombus formation. If a thrombus travels through the bloodstream, it may block other blood vessels, potentially causing serious conditions such as stroke, acute myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, or obstructions in blood vessels elsewhere in the body (e.g. in the upper or lower limbs). - platelet activation Process initiated when platelets bind to the collagen in the subendothelial layer of the blood vessel, leading to the release of signalling molecules that promote platelet aggregation. - platelet aggregation Process by which platelets adhere to one another to form a platelet plug. POLICIES AND STRATEGIES - Agenda 2030 Agenda 2030 is a global action plan in support of people, the planet, prosperity, peace, and partnerships. They include 17 goals and 169 targets that the 191 United Nations member states have committed to addressing by the year 2030.
