301 Virgin Olive Oil Benefits Mitochondrias are small organelles found in the cytoplasm of cells. They are enclosed by a double membrane: a smooth outer membrane and an inner membrane folded into structures called cristae. Mitochondrias contain their own genetic material (mitochondrial DNA), which differs from the DNA found in the nucleus. This DNA contains only a few genes, all of which are involved in energy production, as mitochondria are responsible for generating most of the cell’s energy. Energy is produced by processing energy substrates such as glucose, fatty acids, and amino acids. For this reason, mitochondrias are particularly abundant in tissues and organs with high energy demands. Although their main role is energy production, mitochondrias are also involved in other essential functions, including signalling, differentiation, programmed cell death (apoptosis), and control of cell growth. They are the primary source of free radicals and reactive oxygen species in the cell and are also the organelles most affected by oxidative damage.
