abstract KEYWORDS: Extra virgin olive oil, prevention, cognitwe decline, Alz:}zefrner disease Cognitive decline is the first clinical yndrome of neurodegeneracive diseases, such as Alzheimer disease (AD) and other demencias. There is no curacive treatment for demencias. evertheless, sorne mechanisms repon ible for neuron injury, including vascular damage, oxidative stress, neuroinflammacion, and accumulacion of abnormal proteins are modifiable. Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) exerts proteccive abilicies on vascular function, and it possesses ancioxidant and anci-neuroinflammatory propercies. Animal models of AD which were fed EVOOrich diets reported less accumulacion of abnormal proteins. Prospective observational studies have idencified lower rates of cognitive decline among high olive oil consumers. The "Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea" (PREDIMED, Prevencion with Mediterranean diet) randomised control/ed tria! reported that parcicipants allocated to an intervention with a Mediten-anean diet supplemented with EVOO presented better cognitive performance and significantly fcwer diagno es of mild cognitive impairment when compared to a low-fat diet control group.
