OLIVE OILS AND HEALTH 118 Olive oil is a healthy fat that should form part of the diet, including that of athletes. Several scientific studies have reported a beneficial effect of this oil on cardiovascular health, and the reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation, as potentially positive effects concerning physical exercise. Nevertheless, research on supplementation with minor compounds, such as polyphenols and some vitamins, has not shown clear results on sports performance. Moreover, excessive ingestion of these compounds could lead to detrimental health effects. Studies about the influence of olive oil on other physical activity-related issues, such as joint health and muscle mass, have not provided conclusive results. Extra virgin olive oil, as part of a healthy dietary pattern, should be included in the diet of athletes due to its effects on health status and on the cardiovascular system.
